The New Zealand yachting team opened their accounts in the Athens 2003 Regatta with some fine performances in puffy and shifty offshore breeze conditions yesterday.
In the men's Mistral, Jon-Paul Tobin, second overall, is the top-placed New Zealander.
Tobin dominated the first race and was sixth in the second, which saw atight finish with six sailors in contention for the top position.
Dinghy sailor Sarah Macky ended the day fourth overall in the Europe class after blitzing the fleet in race one.
In race two, she was fouled on the start line and finished 13th.
In the women's Mistral, reigning world champion Barbara Kendall is in eighth place overall after one race.
Race two was abandoned after a huge windshift while Kendall was in second position.
