The Australian yacht News Corporation leads Finland's Amer Sports One by 3 miles with just 24 miles to go in the sixth leg of the Volvo Ocean Race.
At one point today, the two race leaders were sailing within three boat lengths of each other in the Miami-to-Baltimore stretch of the
around-the-world race.
"A super slick spinnaker change to our lightest sail has seen us open up the gap again to 0.25 of a mile," said News Corp skipper Jez Fanstone in an email posted on the official race website.
Amer Sports One, is skippered by New Zealander Grant Dalton.
The leading yachts entered Chesapeake Bay this morning and at last report were sailing in a 10knot southwesterly with the first boat expected to cross the finish line this evening, NZ time.
ASSA ABLOY and overall race leader illbruck are 8 miles behind News Corporation, with SEB another 13 miles back.
Tyco, skippered by New Zealander Kevin Shoebridge, is sailing within a mile or two of djuice and the all-woman Amer Sports Too, approximately 86 miles behind the leader.
