ABN Amro 1, skippered by New Zealander Mike Sanderson, has broken the world record for the most distance sailed in a day by a monohull, clocking 538 nautical miles in a 24-hour period.
The Dutch syndicate, leading the fleet in the first leg of the round-the-world yacht race, smashed theprevious record of 530 miles set by rival movistar (Spain) this year.
It is the second time that Sanderson has held this record, having first broken it as a helmsman on Mari Cha IV in October 2003. Yesterday, ABN Amro 1 were 1507 nautical miles from Cape Town. They had a 64 mile lead over ABN Amro 2 and a 135 mile lead over Brasil 1. Ericsson Racing were fourth, 173 miles behind and Australia's Sunergy and Friends fifth, 1306 miles back.
