Simon Minoprio showed maturity and calm when he demolished the opposition to win the Warren Jones Youth Match Racing yachting regatta in Perth, Western Australia.
The 21-year-old Auckland skipper had clearly done his preparation both afloat and ashore.
He is the leader of a team that now seems certain to make itsmark on the world of sailing.
Minoprio chose well in creating Team Vision Yachting.
Their professionalism showed in Perth and was rewarded with the spoils of victory, which includes automatic entry to the Berlin Match Racing Regatta.
The team also includes tailer Hayden Goodrick, Matthew Stuart on mainsheet, tactician Matthew Davies, bowman Sam Tucker and trimmer Andrew Fenwick.
The skipper and Goodrick will now plan the remainder of this year's programme.
Minoprio hoped to go to the Sydney Cup in March, to Europe from June to August then back to the Berlin regatta later in the year, and perhaps the Ficker Cup in the US.
He will talk to his sponsors before committing to an extensive overseas programme.
One problem for new teams trying to break into the circuit is getting invitations to regattas as many America's Cup crews are looking to stay on the pace until their programmes are under way.
