Chiefs coach Ian Foster has questioned whether Sonny Bill Williams should be used as cover for the wing positions tonight for the All Blacks' Rugby World Cup match against Japan.
With the All Blacks suffering a spate of injuries in the lead-up to the match, coach Graham Henry yesterday hintedthat Sonny Bill Williams might get a run off the bench in an unfamiliar position. That led to speculation it could be on the wing.
Foster told Radio Sport it is a big ask for Williams to play in that position.
"The big issue the All Blacks have is at number 22. Toeava gives you a broad range of skills, so does Kahui. It's a big call for Sonny Bill to go on the wing. As we saw against Tonga, if you don't have someone who can nail those little opportunities, you're going to miss one."
Former All Black Matthew Cooper also had some concerns over whether wing was the most suitable position for Williams.
"He's the type of guy from phase play who is so dominant. He has the ability to play centre. My concern would be has he got that out-and-out speed?," he told Radio Sport.
Foster said it was going to be a bold call switching Richard Kahui from the right to the left wing.
"But when you're not a specialist winger, it probably doesn't matter where you play," he added.
