Former Hurricanes utility Riki Flutey will play for Wellington in this year's ITM Cup.
Flutey last played for Wellington in 2005 before heading to the Northern Hemisphere where he was selected to represent England from 2008-2011.
In 2009, he was also named in the British and Irish Lions to tourSouth Africa after reinventing himself as a midfielder having previously played at halfback, first-five and fullback.
After nine years away from New Zealand, Flutey said he was excited to have the opportunity to return home with his young family and represent Wellington again.
"During my time playing rugby in England, France and Japan, I have experienced different cultures and styles of rugby. While working with, and learning from some exceptional players, coaches and trainers, I feel I have a lot of to share with our upcoming talent," he said.
Lions head coach Chris Boyd said Flutey would bring a huge amount of experience to the Lions, particularly the midfield.
"Riki will add a great deal to the Lions environment. He's a good man, a good rugby player, and he has Wellington rugby's best interests at heart."
Meanwhile, Chiefs centre Charlie Ngatai has re-signed with the back-to-back champions for the next two years. The former national age-grade sprint champion has played 19 matches for the Chiefs, proving to be quick and versatile, with the ability to play anywhere in the backline.
The 23-year-old, who recently signed with Taranaki for the ITM Cup, said he jumped at the chance to stay in Chiefs country.
"This is a great team to play in with great people and a top environment. My rugby has progressed well under the Chiefs, which is why I wanted to stay."
