They were trailing 20-17 when replacement Ali Williams gathered a clearing kick near halfway on the right.

He barrelled through a couple of tackles to get the All Blacks on the front foot.

From the ruck, the ball swung left and a timely injection of acceleration from Joe Rokocoko and a cool-headed final pass by Mils Muliaina gave Chris Jack the overlap and a comfortable run to the line.

The All Blacks also needed Luke McAlister's intercepted try four minutes later as Australia pressed a desperate late bid.

But Jack's try showed the All Blacks were not going to be denied, against the strongest challenge they've had this year.
