Warriors halfback Shaun Johnson is on the road to recovery after having the cast on his broken ankle removed yesterday.

Johnson looked in good spirits mingling with teammates as he hobbled about on crutches at the team's afternoon gym session.

He later posted an update on his Facebook page with several graphic pictures of his visit to his specialist doctor, who fitted him with a less restrictive moon boot.

"Got told I'm healing well and everything is as it should be!," Johson posted. " The big cast has been taken off and I've been put into a moon boot! The feeling of having my foot free is unbelievable haha. There's a few of my scar so if you're not one for gross pics I suggest you close your eyes! Today is a good day #HappyMan."

Johnson suffered his first serious injury while dashing over for a trademark four-pointer in his 101st NRL game against Manly at Mt Smart Stadium last month.

He was carried off the field in visible distress and taken by ambulance directly to hospital.

Scans later revealed he had fractured his fibula and suffered ligament damage while dislocating his ankle. He has had a plate inserted as well as two syndesmotic screws.

The 24-year-old faces a four month recovery period but can now begin his rehab in earnest ahead of the 2016 season.
