NRL: Sam Tomkins weighing up Super League options

Warriors fullback Sam Tomkins says it is still to be decided if he will return to Wigan when he cuts short his time in the NRL at the end of the season.

Wigan have an option to re-sign the 26-year-old England international, whose brother Joel plays for the club.

It is only 18 months since Tomkins left Wigan, his first top-flight club, where he played from from 2008 to 2013, to join the Warriors for a reported world-record fee of £700,000 (A$1.36 million).

At the time he left the Lancashire club, Wigan said they could re-sign Tomkins on a "defined salary" on his return to Super League.

But Tomkins, in an interview with Sky Sports, said on Wednesday he'd yet to decide where he would be continuing his career after struggling to adjust to life in New Zealand.

"I've not worked that out just yet. The first thing was to sort it out over here that I could go back," Tomkins said.

"Hopefully that'll be sorted in the not-too-distant future."

Given his history and family connections to the club, it is no surprise that Tomkins has been linked with a return to Wigan - who lost last season's Super League Grand Final to arch-rivals St Helens.

"That's where my brother's playing and that's where I'm from, but I'm open to other places," he said.

Tomkins said he was planning to leave New Zealand with 12 months left on his three-year contract because of a desire to be closer to his family and friends in the north of England.

"I've enjoyed every minute of being amongst that group but New Zealand is pretty far from Wigan, where all my family live, so I want to be back in England around my family," he explained.

The Warriors have already done a deal to sign Tomkins' replacement, with New Zealand international Roger Tuivasa-Sheck set to join from the Sydney Roosters on a three-year contract that will start next season.
