NRL commentators have blown up after Canterbury was on the wrong end of two controversial calls which conspired to break their back in a heartbreaking 22-20 last-gasp loss to the Broncos.
Brisbane was awarded a controversial penalty in the 79th minute when Dogs fullback Moses Mbye was sin-binned for grabbing Darius Boyd during a kick chase in the in-goal area.
The penalty gave Jamayne Isaako a chance to win the game for Brisbane with less than 10 seconds remaining.
His kick plunged a dagger into the Dogs, who hadn't been behind on the scoreboard for the entire game before the Broncos rising star kicked truly.
The decision to sin-bin Mbye for blocking Boyd as he chased through on a grubber divided commentators — but they were all united in horror when Isaako spilt a long-range kick in a clear knock-on early in the second half only for officials to rule the winger had knocked the Steeden backwards.
"That's a shocker," NRL great Braith Anasta told Fox League.
"That is shocking. What an awful call that is.
"He was right there the referee. How do you get that wrong? I'm sorry, but that's unacceptable. A shocking call."
NRL commentators were furious that the whistle-blowers again proved to be the biggest talking point of another close contest
"It was one decision after another. It's like we are not supposed to win," said Canterbury coach Dean Pay.
