The NRL Footy Show has been canned after moves to overhaul the show failed to reverse a plunge in ratings.

Throughout its 25 years on air, The Footy Show caused plenty of controversial moments that left fans appalled, outraged and, at times, a little sick in the stomach.

BEN ROSS'S HORROR BREAK

A simple test-of-strength segment went horrifically wrong in 2015 when former players Ben Ross and Wendell Sailor engaged in an arm wrestle live on air.

As the tussle unfolded, Ross's right arm snapped under the force and left everyone on stage, in the audience and watching at home averting their eyes.

It was revealed the break had occurred in three different spots as well as a spiral fracture in his elbow.

Ross even threatened legal action against Channel 9 after not receiving compensation for his medical expenses.

"I really don't want to take legal action against Nine but you'd think they'd have some type of responsibility in compensation, in some way. But I've haven't heard anything," Ross told The Daily Telegraph.

BEAU RYAN'S RACIST COMMENT CANNED

The show's funny man Beau Ryan found himself in hot water during his segment Beau Knows in mid-2016.

Ryan hit the streets of Wentworthville in Sydney's west and stopped beside a woman of Asian descent taking a photo of three dogs in the window of a shop.

"Picking out which one for dinner?" Ryan asked before grinning at the camera.

The backlash was swift and severe as fans couldn't believe the horrific comment not only made it to air, but was then put on social media.

An apology was issued the following morning with the program admitting it went "too far".

MATTY JOHNS SACKED AFTER SEX SCANDAL

A regular for years, Matty Johns was sensationally shown the door in 2009 after being embroiled in a group sex scandal.

Johns admitted he was one of several Cronulla Sharks players to engage in sexual acts with a woman in a hotel while on a pre-season tour of New Zealand in 2002.

The woman claimed she suffered emotional trauma as a result, telling the ABC's Four Corners program in 2009: "I only remember one player definitely; it was Matthew Johns. He laughed and he joked and was very loud and boisterous."

In a 2009 interview with A Current Affair, Johns said the woman was a willing participant and said he left the room when more teammates started filing in.

"I was unaware that other people were coming into the room (and) at the point that they did, I stepped away from it," he said.

"After I declined, I stepped out of the room but I stepped back in to make sure that everything was OK and at no time was she under any distress."

Johns was stood down from his role on the show after the scandal broke.

WALLY LEWIS SPARKS SEXISM STORM

In the early stages of 2017, rugby league legend Wally Lewis found himself in hot water after making a distasteful joke about oral sex.

Lewis appeared alongside Australian Jillaroos player Allana Ferguson on the show's Joking Off segment, where the aim is to stump the other guest with a variety of hilarious phrases.

"The King" took things a step too far when Ferguson said she would read her next question differently.

"I'm going to do the next one with no teeth," Ferguson said.

"It always feels better that way," Lewis replied, smiling.

The comment drew gasps from the studio audience and left co-host Erin Molan in a state of shock.

The backlash on social media was severe.

THE 'MAHATMA COTE' AFFAIR

Former Australian Test cricketer Greg Ritchie had a regular stint on the show with his controversial character Mahatma Cote.

The segments saw Ritchie portray the Punjabi Sikh while reading the latest NRL news.

Fans often complained, but it didn't seem to deter Ritchie from pulling out the skit.

After being effectively banned by Cricket Australia from appearing at its functions back in 2012-13, Ritchie struck again in 2017.

He spoke at an Adelaide Crows function before the team's showdown and was labelled as "sexist, racist and inappropriate" by AFL diversity executive Tanya Hosch, according to The Age.

THE FUNNY MOMENTS

It wasn't all bad press from the show. There were also moments that left fans in stitches.

Matty Johns' alter ego Reg Reagan was a crowd favourite, but was put on the shelf when Johns was shown the door.

The womanising, big-drinking Reagan often left fans squirming in their seats, but his "bring back the biff" war cry will forever remain a part of the game.

A skit from 2001 where the panel all decided it was a good idea to eat chilis on live air left viewers — and the panel — with watery eyes.

Then there was the stomach churning moment when former host Paul Vautin and Beau Ryan rode the Vomatron on the Gold Coast.

After being thrown back and forth on the ride, the duo were seen hunched over and throwing up on the grass.
