Australian rugby league utility Kurt Gidley has ruled himself out of the Four Nations tournament to have surgery on a knee injury.
Newcastle captain Gidley has told the Australian Rugby League he needs an operation on an ongoing knee problem.
He will still be required to undergo a medical examinationif he is picked in the 24-man Kangaroos squad to be announced on Monday, an ARL official said.
Australia play a Test against New Zealand at Ausgrid Stadium on October 16 before flying out for the UK five days later.
The Four Nations tournament also involves the Kiwis, England and Wales.
