5. Craig Stadler, tee shot on the par three 12th
It came within what a hacker would consider 'a gimme' of breaking a 26-year drought for hole-in-ones at the 151-yard 12th. The result was in contrast to a couple of rounds which, until that point, had him at 17-over. The Walrus celebrated in inimitable style by grabbing his cap and showing less facial movement than Joan Rivers.
4. Jimmy Walker, second shot on the par three 16th
In a tribute to weekend warriors who refuse to play a lofted club around the green for fear of the yips, Walker used the toe of his putter to chip across the apron and down the treacherous slope. He missed the hole by about 12 feet, two-putted and took bogey. Still, he easily made the cut at two-under overall.
3. Phil Mickelson - tee, second and third shots on the par three 12th
Whack, he found the bunker. Whack, he found the bunker. Whack, he found the bunker. Three shots with identical results in the middle of Amen Corner propelled Mickelson out of a tournament he's won three times. The sand wedge responsible faces a sentence of periodic detention in a distant corner of Mickelson's garage. Mickelson thumped the culprit against his shoe during the ordeal while proclaiming to his caddy that "there's no sand in these bunkers".
2. Rory McIlroy - second shot on the par five 13th
It wasn't a bad-looking strike until a water sprinkler head interfered. Boing! The ball bounced about 25m into a thicket of azaleas. McIlroy was left poking out like a scarecrow to play his shot. The story was almost as far-fetched as that of the fan who bet 1200 on the Northern Irishman to win the tournament after seeing his face in a Danish pastry. McIlroy's five-over 77 left him on the four-over cut for the tournament.
1. YE Yang - tee shot on the par four fifth
Before he'd had a chance to bellow 'Fore!' or even purse his lips into an 'F', patrons were familiarising themselves with the manicured grass to the left of the fairway. Yang shanked his tee shot through at about head height, made a double bogey six and got cut. He exited Magnolia Lane with a two-round aggregate of 10-over.
