Former New Zealand Open champion Mahal Pearce made a strong start in his bid to secure a spot on golf's European Tour in Spain today.
Pearce shot a one-under-par 71 in the opening round of the qualifying school finals at the San Roque Club, Cadiz, to be tied for fourth, two shots off the pace.
The only other New Zealander in the field of 168, Gareth Paddison, made a disappointing start with an opening round of five-over 77 to be tied for 107th.
The top-75 after four rounds will contest the final two rounds, with the top-35 earning their Tour card for next year.
Welshman Mark Mouland, France's Raphael Pellicioli and England's Simon Wakefield were tied for the lead after shooting opening rounds of 69.
