New Zealand lost the early wicket of Mark Richardson to be nine for one in reply to England's first innings of 228 at stumps on day one of the first cricket test in Christchurch today.
Richardson was dismissed leg before wicket for two by a swinging ball from Matthew Hoggard, but opening partner Matthew Horne and night watchman Daniel Vettori saw it safely through the rest of the six overs before the close.
England's innings was anchored by captain Nasser Hussain who scored 104, his 10th test century.
After coming in during the first over with England nought for two, Hussain batted 323 minutes, faced 244 balls and hit 14 fours in a gutsy knock which saved the tourists from an embarrassing collapse.
Mark Ramprakash, with 31, was the only other England batsman to top 30 after being sent in to bat on a seaming portable pitch.
Chris Drum, playing just his third test, was the best New Zealand bowler with three for 36 off 20.2 overs. Allrounder Chris Cairns, after taking two wickets in the first over, ended with three for 58 off 15 to take his test wicket tally to 197.
