Paul Gallen has signed a one-year contract extension with Cronulla, confirming that the veteran forward will go around again in 2017.

"There was never any doubt that I was going to play here next year" said Gallen.

"I'm really excited for what will probably be my last year.

"You never say never in this game, you don't know what is going to happen but I'm certainly excited to be here for another year."

Gallen also confirmed his fitness for Friday's preliminary final against North Queensland as the Sharks attempt to reach their first grand final since 1997.

A veteran of 277 matches for Cronulla, 24 Origin matches for New South Wales and 32 Tests, Gallen will be the oldest player in the NRL next season.
