A hat-trick to Kurt Baker has seen the All Blacks Sevens safely through to tonight's Hong Kong Cup semifinals.
There they will face the Blitzbokke after South Africa shut out the USA 28-0 in the second quarter-final.
In wet, slippery conditions which were a real leveller in the first spell, New Zealand led just 7-0 after Sonny Bill Williams - who showed some nice touches after being relatively anonymous in the pool stages - laid on a pass for Baker to cross between the uprights.
Ben Roach tied it up for Wales after Sione Molia was sinbinned.
Baker's second was the best of the game after tremendous lead-up work by Pita Ahki and Regan Ware on the left flank before Baker was given another helping hand by Williams for his third.
New Zealand will need to work out a tight game plan in the wet and with just 10 men from which to again choose for the semifinal. Liam Messam should play a key role in this clash.
Kickoff for the New Zealand-South Africa clash is set for 7.44pm.
New Zealand 19 (Kurt Baker 3 tries; Gillies Kaka 2 con)
Wales 7 (Ben Roach try; Jordan Williams con)
HT: 7-0
