American Ben Crane shot a spectacular eight-under 62 to grab the clubhouse lead in the first round of the US$3.5 million ($5.16 million) event in Wisconsin.
Ignoring violent thunderstorms which interrupted play for more than four hours, Crane hit six birdies and an eagle to take a one-stroke advantage over 2003 champion Kenny Perry.
Chris Smith, Jerry Kelly and Jeff Sluman, who has won the event twice, were on 64.

Wellington veteran Harry Haenga has reached the final for the 10th time.
Haenga, who plays for Capital City, eased to a 6-1 win over Aucklander Ben Farnworth in the semifinals yesterday and will next play another former champion, Wyn Belmont, of Hawkes Bay, for the title today.
Belmont did not drop a frame in his semifinal against Canterbury's Brent Jones.
Haenga won the title in 1992 and 1995, while his son Daniell was successful for four successive years from 1998.
Haenga won the first five frames against Farnworth, dropped the the sixth 63-28, then took the match with a 58-45 margin in the seventh.
Belmont gave Jones few opportunities, with Jones only looking likely in the second frame when he enjoyed a 48-33 lead.
Two former champions, Richard Muehlauer, of Auckland, and Steve Robertson, of Waikato, were beaten in the quarterfinals.
Robertson, who won the title three times 1987 and 1989, went out 5-2 against Haenga.
