Golf: Hutson, Garvey dominate South Island stroke-play

Mark Hutson and Amelia Garvey have recorded hugely dominant victories at the South Island Stroke-Play Championship in Dunedin this weekend.

St Clair Golf Club played host to some clinical golf from both champions as Hutson won by a comfortable five shots and Garvey an incredible 12 shots.

With rounds of 65, 69, 66 and a final round of five-under 66, Hutson was unstoppable as he continues to elevate his game to new heights.

"It was really pleasing to play so consistently, especially over the weekend," said Hutson.

"Hopefully I can build on my good start to the year and continue this form."

An exciting eagle straight after the turn on the tenth hole gave the North Harbour amateur the perfect boost to come home in comfort and become the new South Island Stroke-Play champion.

"It was a great way to kick off the back nine and it certainly gave me the confidence to go all the way."

Also going five-under in the final round was Kevin Koong who finished on a high to take out second place.

If you thought that was a big win, Garvey took it to the next level with a whopping 12 shot victory.

The Cantabrian was so comfortable out in front that not even a poor final round of five-over par (79) was enough to stop her after opening with three clinical rounds of 68, 68 and yet again, 68.

This is just another occasion that Garvey has proven her talent and when her game is on, she is hard to stop.

These are all positive signs for the Kaiapoi golfer as we near the first event of the Jennian Homes Charles Tour for 2017 where she looks to win for the second time at this level. Garvey will also aim to defend her Muriwai Open title in two months' time and continue this momentum.
