Football: Dunning at Bay Utd helm after Angell ban

Brett Angell will not be at the helm of the Hawke's Bay United soccer team tomorrow after a one-match ban was slapped on him yesterday.

The Thirsty Whale-sponsored franchise team coach was banished to the stands during the 1-1 draw against Tasman United in their ISPS Handa Premiership match at Park Island, Napier, last Sunday.

"We're running out of time on a Friday so the suspension will stand for the weekend regardless," Bay United general manager Shane McKenzie said last night when asked if the franchise was going to appeal the New Zealand Football disciplinary committee's ruling.

"I wouldn't says we're overly pleased with the outcome but it is what it is at the moment and, regardless, he's going to miss the game [tomorrow]," McKenzie said before they kick off at 2pm tomorrow against the Canterbury United Dragons in a round nine clash at English Park, Christchurch.

He said the franchise would still request a full report on what the reasons were for imposing a ban on Angell.

The Englishman found himself in the corporate booth of the Bluewater Stadium pavilion about 10 minutes before the final whistle after fourth official Mark Roil brought to referee Chris Mills' attention that Angell should be sent off for boorish behaviour.

The coach was in the ear of Roil for the best part of the game, especially after the equaliser from Tasman United striker Maksym Kowal in the 64th minute.

Assistant coach Jamie Dunning, who will be in the coaching box for the franchise youth team, will assume the mantle of Bay United coach tomorrow.

Tomorrow's game should be a humdinger for the two franchise teams who are in the habit of making the playoffs each summer.

The Will Gerdsen-coached hosts have started their campaign sluggishly this season but secured three valuable points with a 2-0 victory over Southern United in the South Island derby last weekend.

After a promising undefeated start, the Bill Robertson-captained visitors also have gone off the boil with three losses on the trot and a stalemate with ample evidence they are struggling to put the ball into the net.

They will kick off tomorrow without star signing American/Ghanaian import striker Samuel Adjei who is "still not 100 per cent" from a niggly injury.

Japan import Hayato Wakino said they were focusing on finding the net during training this week.

"We've missed a lot of goals in two games," said Wakino who is making his debut with Bay United.

The 24-year-old sees himself as a versatile winger but has run out with two starts and intermittently off the bench as a striker after picking up an ankle injury on scoring a goal.

"It's really difficult for me. I'm small and defenders are bigger so it's hard to hold on the ball because it takes time for others to come," said a speedy Wakino who played for Southland United in Invercargill before Southern United picked him up.

The former Lithuanian division one professional is hanging out for game time here and polishing his English before embarking on another stint in Europe. For now he's strengthening his leg muscles to be 100 per cent fit again.

His father, Yasuhiro Wakino, a social player, introduced him to the beautiful game when he was 6.

Six years later the son thought he could make something of it professionally and is now living the dream.
