Cycling: Record to Cipollini

Italy's world champion road cyclist Mario Cipollini broke a 70-year-old record for the most stage wins in the Giro d'Italia with his 42nd career victory at Montecatini Terme yesterday.

The 36-year-old Cipollini outsprinted Australia's Robbie McEwen and Italy's Alessandro Petacchi at the end of the 160km stage in a carbon copy of Monday's finish when Cipollini equalled Alfredo Binda's record of 41 stage wins that was set from 1925-1933.

Italy's Stefano Garzelli, who was caught up in a crash on the final corner, retained the overall lead.
