South Africa have won the women's triples gold medal at the world bowls championships in Christchurch.
South Africa's Lorna Trigwell, Sylvia Burns and Loraine Victor, proved too strong for Australia, winning 15-11 in their final at the Burnside green this morning.
Skip Trigwell was on fire with heraccuracy, but it was the perfect bowl from her lead, Burns, that sat by the jack and stayed there under fierce Australian fire to give South Africa their winning shot in the 18th end.
Australia won the first end, but South Africa took the next nine and never looked like dropping their guard.
The Australians clawed back into the game with a four on the 14th end when Trigwell was unable to clear the clutter around the jack.
Australia was holding shot in the 15th end when Trigwell played one of her perfect draws to snatch another point.
With South Africa ahead by only three going into the last end, it was anyone's game, but Burns' bowl stayed put and the Australians had to be content with silver.
New Zealand took the bronze medal after Sharon Sims' women's triples lost to South Africa in their semifinal. Wales was the other bronze winner after losing to Australia in the semis.
