After years of moving around the North Island, Fraser and Sue Bell were ready to put down roots somewhere that felt genuinely welcoming. Two years on, they’ve found exactly that at Greytown Orchards – a place that offers both freedom and connection, right on the doorstep of one of the Wairarapa’s most loved villages.
What first caught their attention was Greytown itself. “We love the village feel,” says Fraser. “There’s a great vibe, and we can walk into town to restaurants, or the supermarket. It makes everyday life easy.” Greytown Orchards felt like a natural extension of that lifestyle – thoughtfully laid out, the right size, and easy to settle into.

While having their own space matters, it’s the sense of community that has really stood out. “It’s just a great place to live, with great people,” Fraser says. “We’ve met and got to know more neighbours here than anywhere else we’ve lived before.” That connection comes naturally, with plenty of opportunities to be involved – or simply enjoy the company of others when it suits.
Days can be as active or as relaxed as they choose. Fraser keeps busy with biking several times a week, along with fishing trips to the river or surf casting at nearby beaches. Closer to home, there’s mahjong, pétanque, craft groups, book clubs, shared dinners, outings, and the all-important Happy Hour. “That one definitely matters,” he laughs.

One of the biggest surprises has been the people themselves. “The range of skills and life experiences here is incredible,” says Fraser. “If you need help, there is always someone you can call on. It really does feel like a proper community.” The practical benefits are there too – especially when it comes to travel. “We’ve just come back from our second big overseas trip since moving here. You get home and everything’s taken care of – lawns mown, gardens tidy. It’s a real weight off your mind.”
Looking ahead, the upcoming community hub, The Lodge, set for completion in 2026, is something they’re both excited about – not least their grandson, who’s already eyeing up the swimming pool.
For Fraser and Sue, Greytown Orchards isn’t about slowing down. It’s about living well, staying connected, and enjoying the freedom to make the most of each day – supported by a community that feels like home.
Come and visit, we’d love to show you just how full of possibility retirement can be.
