As one of the oldest farming co-operatives in New Zealand, LIC has a proud history of serving farmers for more than 100 years, and its future is looking brighter than ever - for the business, its shareholders and staff.
The co-op supplies three-quarters of the country's bull semen from its farm outside Hamilton, information and automation systems, herd testing and diagnostics testing. Subsidiary business, Dairy Automation Limited (DAL), also provide sensors that measure fat, protein, somatic cell counts and volume, and present real-time data while a cow is being milked.
LIC's focus is on adding more value on-farm for its shareholders by providing genetics and information to create superior livestock; information to improve decision making to enable superior livestock performance; hardware and systems to improve productivity and decision making; creating synergies through mergers and acquisitions, and by placing a renewed emphasis on international markets.
Strong investment into research and development also continues, to deliver on future farmer needs.
Chief executive Wayne McNee says the co-op has a bright future ahead as a key player in the country's dairying powerhouse, an ambitious growth strategy and a talented team of people committed to its success.
"LIC plays a key role in the dairying industry, providing services and solutions to improve the productivity and prosperity of our farmers."
"We operate at the forefront of dairying science, and it's a proven fact that we improve the feed-to-milk efficiency of the New Zealand dairy cow more than any other factor on-farm."
Currently LIC generate revenues of $200+ million, but the goal is to increase this to $1 billion by 2025.
"LIC has been a growing and successful business for some time, but there is a lot more potential."
"To achieve our goal, we need to grow here in New Zealand and overseas, we need to deliver the right solutions to our farmers, and we need to ensure we have the best people on-board who are dedicated to making a difference to farming," Wayne McNee said.
With offices around the world, LIC employs a large team of more than 700 employees with a wide range of knowledge and expertise, including scientists, software developers, sales, marketing, HR and finance - to name a few. Staff numbers swell to around 2000 for the peak dairy mating season.
