Despite growing up on a farm in the small Southland town of Otautau, Takunda Mabonga has always been drawn to creativity, connection and storytelling. Now studying for a Bachelor of Communication, he is channelling those interests into a degree that blends purpose with passion.
He says it was Te Kunenga ki Pūrehuroa Massey University’s strong reputation in journalism and a bit of family influence that helped him decide where to study. His mother is a Massey graduate, and her experience left an impression.

Majoring in Journalism and minoring in Media Studies, Takunda says the combination has given him both practical skills and a deeper understanding of how stories shape culture and society. He has learned to see communication as more than words, but as a tool for connection, empathy and impact.
He says one of the most surprising lessons from his degree has been realising just how powerful everyday communication can be. What started as learning to write a proper email has evolved into confidence in public speaking, interviewing and leadership.
“Realising that communication itself is a skill has changed how I approach every conversation with more purpose and awareness.”
Outside the classroom, Takunda serves as the Wellington campus Vice-President of Te Tira Ahu Pae, the student association. The role, he says, has been one of the most rewarding experiences of his life, giving him the chance to advocate for students, lead initiatives and contribute to the campus community. It’s also taught him valuable lessons about leadership and the importance of listening.
“Balancing study, leadership and playing rugby hasn’t always been easy, but those challenges have taught me how to manage pressure and find balance without burning out. Growth often comes through challenges.”
After graduation, Takunda hopes to apply what he has learned to his family business while continuing to pursue rugby at a high level. Longer-term, he wants to create a platform that shares powerful stories about Aotearoa and eventually give back through public service or politics.
For those considering studying communication, his advice is simple – dive in. “Communication teaches you to understand people, culture and the power of storytelling. Don’t let fear hold you back, say yes to new experiences, chase your passions and have fun doing it.”
