Australians more passionate about a republic

Australians are becoming more passionate about a republic, with strong feelings for or against at the highest level on record. A poll yesterday in the Australian newspaper shows polarisation of views in all groups, including traditionally monarchist conservative voters and those over 50.

Fifty-two per cent want a republic. Those "strongly supporting" one are a record 39 per cent, up six points from March last year. Strongly against are 23 per cent, up three points.
