A milk company has been convicted and fined for selling short measures of milk - including some "one-litre" cartons that contained only 874ml.
Southern Fresh Milk, of Invercargill, yesterday pleaded guilty in the Christchurch District Court to 10 charges of selling the short-measure cartons. It was fined $3380, including costs and solicitors' fees.
The manager of the Ministry of Consumer Affairs trade measurement division, John Barker, said a check on a complaint had been made at a Christchurch Pak 'N Save supermarket. All 55 cartons tested contained less than one litre.
Ministry officials often issued warnings or $500 infringement notices to companies they found selling short measures, but the deficiencies were large enough to be made public by a prosecution.
