KEY POINTS:

A young mother who tried to kill her two-year-old son by stabbing and suffocating him was today sentenced at the High Court in Auckland to three years jail.

Kim Knoll, 19, was found guilty last year of the attempted murder of her two-year-old son Lashawn.

Knoll stabbed her son in the stomach with a boning knife then tried to suffocate him with a pillow in May last year.

She later told family that a man wearing a balaclava and armed with a knife had burst into her bedroom and attacked her son.
