Women are more generous donors to charities than men, a survey has found.
The most generous are women aged 30 to 49. Young men are the least generous.
A survey last month by Forsythe Research of one New Zealand's biggest charities, Christian Children's Fund, found that about two-thirds of CCF
sponsors were women.
Men accounted for 36 per cent of sponsors, but those aged under 30 made up just 13 per cent of the sponsors.
More than half of the sponsors lived in a large town or city. The 29 per cent of sponsors living in rural areas was high compared with the 15 per cent of all New Zealanders living in rural areas.
CCF spokeswoman Sally Frewin said she believed older women were generous because they were more nurturing. "They are more likely to realise the needs of others."
The rural support showed the strong sense of community and values still in rural New Zealand.
The CCF survey also showed that 70 per cent of the sponsors had university entrance or tertiary qualifications.
