Woman who fell from cliff top dies

A 20-year-old woman who fell from a cliff top at Clifton, near Sumner, on Saturday has died, police say.

The woman passed away at Christchurch Hospital around 1pm yesterday.

Police duty inspector, Inspector Peter Hegarty, said the death has been referred to the coroner.

Police were called to a location near Kinsey Terrace, Clifton just before 1pm on Saturday, after having been contacted by the woman's employer, and by passers-by who saw the woman near a cliff edge.

Mr Hegarty said police staff spoke with the woman for over an hour before she fell, shortly after 2pm.

She suffered serious injuries in the fall and was taken by ambulance to hospital, however she later died from her injuries.

"Initial indications are that the deceased has fallen accidentally, but it will be for the coroner to determine the cause of death," he said.
