Woman in hospital following serious assault

An Auckland woman is recovering in Middlemore Hospital following a serious assault in Otara overnight.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Ellwood said the random assault took place on Gilbert Rd around 1am.

"We have a female victim in Middlemore Hospital with a fairly serious injury."

The 27-year-old woman remained in a serious, but stable condition, Mr Ellwood said.

"We're speaking with witnesses and following a number of lines of inquiry- we're early days yet."

Earlier reports suggested the woman had been attacked with a bar.

Mr Ellwood confirmed a weapon had been used.
