“I didn’t see him jump up there or anything, I just saw him standing on top of the car,” Ropati said.
As traffic began to move, Ropati said the driver accelerated, and the man was thrown backwards off the vehicle.
“The dude just sort of got swept off his feet as the car went forward and just went wham, straight off his back, and his head just went bang on to the concrete,” he said.
“You could hear the clap when he hit the concrete.”
Ropati said he was driving directly behind the car and immediately stopped to help.
“I jumped out of my car and ran over to check if he was all good,” he said.
“There was just a trail of blood pouring out of his head.”
He said he grabbed a towel from his car and placed it under the man’s head as blood continued to flow.
Ropati said the man appeared disoriented and severely injured.
Ropati and another bystander rolled the man on to his side as he continued to move erratically.
Emergency services were called and Ropati said several people worked to keep the man conscious until first responders arrived.
He said a firefighter assisted before paramedics took over treatment.
Ropati said he stepped back once paramedics were working on the man, who appeared to be in his late 30s or 40s.
The man remains in critical condition in hospital and inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances around the incident.
