Wild winds move further north to Wellington

Wild weather is working its way up the country.

Gusts up to 100km/h have been measured at Mt Kaukau in Wellington this hour, the MetService said.

Further north, in Auckland, it has been raining heavily.

Gales of 104km/h battered Dunedin Hills this morning and wild winds are expected in other areas of the country later today.

Southern fire communications shift manager Hilary West said the fire service this morning attended three cases of downed power and phone lines.

A trampoline had blown into phone lines in residential Wakari and power and phone lines in North East Valley and Opoho were down, she said.

Fire crews had also been called to fix loose roofing iron at a school in Wakiri.

Earlier today, MetService warned gusts of up to 100km/h were expected to hit Wellington tomorrow.
