A $60,000 earthquake study due to begin soon in Whakatane may help make the town a safer place to live in.
Funded by Environment Bay of Plenty, the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences' study will analyse the potential impact of seismic activity on soils in the urban area.
The mapped results will be given to the Whakatane District Council to assist in planning land use.
A similar project has been done in the western Bay of Plenty and another is underway in Rotorua.
