Commuter chaos in Wellington as Mt Victoria tunnel closes

Commuters could be in for delays this morning with the closure of State Highway 1 through the Mt Victoria tunnel.

Contractors are working to fix a problem with fire safety systems in the main thoroughfare, the Transport Agency says.

RNZ understands a fire alarm went off in the tunnel, but there was no blaze.

The agency says it does not know how long it will take to resolve.

Police say it will be closed for “some time”.

Drivers are being warned to follow diversions and expect delays.
