Vehicle emission standards will be phased in from January to combat the "invisible road toll", Associate Transport Minister Judith Tizard announced today.
The Vehicle Exhaust Emissions Rule would ensure all vehicles entering New Zealand were manufactured to a recognised international emissions standard.
"Vehicle emissions are a major source of health problems, including asthma, heart disease and bronchitis," Ms Tizard said.
"This new rule is a key step in helping reduce related illnesses and fatalities due to vehicle emissions."
A report released last year estimated about 400 people died prematurely each year as a result of exposure to vehicle emissions, Ms Tizard said.
