Using recruits from Britain to fill Auckland police shortages is a political quick-fix, the Police Association says. Seventy-six police officers from the United Kingdom started training at the Police College in Porirua yesterday.
They will be required to serve at least two years in Auckland before being able to transfer.
"The real test will be in two years," said Police Association president Greg O'Connor, "when they will be able to transfer out of the Auckland area or, dare we say it, leave the New Zealand police force for greener pastures."
