A police spokeswoman said the car was then followed by police, with no flashing lights or sirens, until it was near Otaki.
"[It was not until] the police car was right behind it that a pursuit was initiated using lights and sirens," she said.
The car "failed to stop for red and blue flashing lights" and was spiked by police in Otaki, but continued driving north to Levin where it finally came to a halt about 9pm.
"Finally the vehicle, on its rims, was stopped by crashing into a police vehicle at low speed," the police spokeswoman said.
The two occupants of the vehicle were uninjured.
They are helping police with their inquiries. No charges have been laid at this stage.
