Mfat warns against travel to Turkey after bombing at Istanbul airport.

New Zealanders are being warned not to travel to Turkey after the bombing of Istanbul's Ataturk International Airport that killed at least 36 people and three suicide bombers.

Dozens were also injured in the attack, which is strongly suspected to be linked to the Isis (Islamic State) terrorist group.

The attackers detonated two bombs at a security checkpoint after opening fire, according to reports from the Turkish Government.

New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade last night updated the Safe Travel website to advise Kiwis who might be in, or about to travel to, the region.

"We continue to advise against all tourist and other non-essential travel to Istanbul due to the heightened threat of terrorism (high risk).

"New Zealanders in Istanbul are advised to follow any instructions issued by the local authorities, exercise heightened vigilance in public places and register their details.

"We also recommend contacting family in New Zealand as soon as possible to let them know you're okay."

Ataturk Airport has partially resumed operations, but delays were to be expected, Mfat said.

"New Zealanders with imminent travel plans to Turkey are advised to contact their airline or travel agent directly to check whether their flights have been affected."
