A Port Waikato man is on trial accused of a double murder following a confrontation outside his home.
Bernard Taylor, 39, is accused of stabbing Tahiwi Herangi and Hiko Clark to death in the early hours of January 3.
He is also accused of wounding Waka Cooper and Maraekaiti Teao-Taupo
with intent to cause them grievous bodily harm.
In his opening address to a jury in the High Court at Auckland, prosecutor Steve Haszard said Taylor was "fuelled by frustration, anger and alcohol".
The court heard of an earlier incident involving a young man attending a party at Taylor's home and a group of youths outside the property.
The young people returned later and a fight developed after some taunting and verbal abuse.
Mr Haszard said Taylor's brother, Charlie, was knocked to the ground and was being beaten up.
Taylor grabbed a knife from the kitchen, went outside and stabbed the four victims.
Initially, Mr Haszard said, Taylor denied being involved.
But later he told police he had had problems with groups of youths in the town who thought he was a member of the Mongrel Mob.
In a brief opening address, defence counsel Hugh Leabourn said Taylor had been acting in defence of his brother, children and others at his home.
