An 18-year-old youth is dead after his trail bike left the road and he hit a road sign at Kaukapakapa, 30km northwest of Auckland, last night.
The dead youth's name has yet to be released. Police said he was unlicensed and was not wearing a helmet when he crashed in very poor conditions.
His death was the third involving a motorbike during the weekend.
John McLachlan, 57, of Pareora, died when his motorcycle struck a car head-on about midday yesterday on State Highway 1 near Waikouaiti, 42km northeast of Dunedin.
Police said the highway was closed for about four hours while police and emergency services investigated and cleared the crash site.
Meanwhile, the name of a 39-year-old man killed on Saturday night near Waimana, 27km southeast of Whakatane, is yet to be released.
Police said the man died at the scene after his motorcycle ran off the road and crashed.
