A three-year-old Nelson boy died after being accidentally run over by a vehicle at a motor service centre in the city yesterday.
Detective Sergeant Mark Kaveney, of Nelson police, said the boy was killed after the incident at Houston Motors Ltd at 11.30am.
He said the child was at
the centre with his mother to pick up a vehicle that had been serviced.
One of the employees moved a four-wheel drive vehicle in the area and the boy is believed to have run in front of it as he tried to go to his mother who was in the service centre office area.
The boy went "completely under the vehicle", Mr Kaveney said.
Nelson St John Ambulance attended the accident, and the boy was taken to Nelson Hospital with serious head, chest and abdominal injuries. He died a short time later.
Mr Kaveney said the employee was in "deep shock" and was being helped by Victim Support. "It is very, very sad, the guy never saw him," Mr Kaveney said.
"The family is beside themselves, distraught."
Occupational Safety and Heath was investigating the accident and a police scene investigation had been carried out.
