The Course Handicapper gets a lot of flak, for just recording what we do on the field, but it's the Golf Lords who decide the formulas, slope rating and all the techno stuff.
However, Handicapper Ian has a grin as wide as a Crusaders supporter this week, after recording the terrific
scores from the Tuesday grumpies. The following will have only themselves to blame for the shift in their indexes.
Playing a fantastic round the top gun was Ray Lind with 63 nett. One shot back Bryan Tucker on 64. Tim Warren with a 65 was two shots clear of his good friend Brian Bidwill on 67. George Marshall and Tom Bunny both returned in with a very respectable 68.
Weekend
Saturdays Chicago Stableford was played in brilliant conditions and it was Stuart McLeod and Peter Bain's turn for the limelight coming in with 42 Pts, and in 3rd place Lyall Callaghan with 40.
There was only one two, so the bird nest went Garry Paterson, who fully deserved it with a 10 metre putt on the 8th.
Garry had a great game against Bill Jones in the Captains Trophy winning on the 18th. Highlights - chipping in on the 4th for a bird, then another on the 8th.
It was great that so many turned up for the Sunday Stableford. Playing in the Martin Four ball, Shane Hartnell running a little late left his partner the challenge to lead the way on the 1st hole, before joining play against Steve Chamberlain and Sam Cooke.
The result, the early bird taking the worm (win) on the 18th
Well done Steve and Sam. Pete, get your partner an alarm clock for next year.
The handicapper, having used Saturday as a practice round had a cracker to lead the way with 41pts. In 2nd place Transporter Trev on 40, 3rd to Garry Paterson on 39. 4th place going to Neil Smith with 38.
The prize pool for the twos shared between Garry Paterson, Stuart Taplin, Lance Phelps, Bill Crook and Brian Moisley.
Interclub
Our club's top two players Kris Chamberlain and Sherry Weatherstone are members of the Wairarapa Team that play in the Landsdowne'Trophy Comp. Playing last Monday week at Miramar in fantastic conditions against Royal Wellington, the 18th hole was obviously Out of Bounds as all three of their Matches were decided on the 17th. Good luck at Manor Park against Hutt to all the team next on 19th June.
Most of our Pennants team were overawed at playing at Royal Wellington on Monday, despite the advantage of the cored greens. Jill Colton was the Star player with a win, and despite having to give loads of shots, congratulations to Sherry Weatherstone and Sharon Jephson who provided some southern sting to halve both of their matches.
Wednesday ladies
There was thick mist to add mystery on the course on ladies day, but unlike Jade Stadium it lifted.
No spectacular results were to be expected and the competitors didn't create any upsets at the TAB, with the scoring starting at ?1.
In 1st place Diana Donald was comfortably ahead of 2nd place getters Kris Chamberlain and Dinee Creswell. In 4th equal, another one of our new members Julia Kidd, in the esteemed company of Sherry Weatherstone, Mariana Mc Dermott, Kirsty Icke, and the two Jill's (Colton and Baker).
9 holers
They are in the 2nd round of their handicap championships, and unlike the Men they do not combine Match play with stroke play, instead take a punt for Closest to the Pin.
All Teed Up Closest to pin on 8, Carol Parkinson.
Property Brokers closest to pin on 16. Sandra Burgess.
Thursday Club
It is becoming something of a clich? to say that the Thursday Club has exclusive rights to great weather - and it could be tempting the anti-golf gods, if they exist, to change things!
Unlike last week when we had thirteen twos, this week there are only two, scored by Terry Blacktop and the ever-reliable Ray Lind.
Nearest the Pin went to our President Bruce Johns, but, breaking with tradition, we awarded the Pukemanu Hotel Voucher to Ed Elworthy for brave acts against all adversity and still coming in with, well, some stableford points.
This week the stableford winner was Bruce Sullivan with an exemplary 45 points, followed by the same Bruce Johns and Neil Smith, lagging somewhat, on 40 points.
On 39 we had Craig Colton, Ray Lind, and Rob Smith who, incidentally, outwitted Lance Phelps on the penultimate hole to go through to the semi-finals of the Martin Fourball.
In actual fact, despite the great conditions, players struggled for good scores, and it may have been because our green keeper was away in Wainuiomata playing other green keepers!
Dates for the Diary
Wednesday 7th June ? Ladies Open Day- All Welcome
Sunday 11th June - Ngahau Trophy- Grandad and Grandmas Stableford
Saturday 17th June Mid Winter Members Ambrose Tournament
Please get your entries into Sue at the Club (tele 06 306 9076) or be at the Club at 11.45am on the weekend dates to practice the putting and be in the draws.
If you are grand parents in waiting, just turn up and play in the usual stableford round.
