Tauranga schools have been spared paying up to $10,000 extra in toilet taxes to the city council.
Hardship pleas from the city's 30 schools have prompted the council to drop its plan to scrap the $80,000 subsidy on toilet charges, which would have passed on the cost to schools.
The discount variedaccording to school size, ranging from $300 for smaller primary schools to $3000 to $4000 for intermediates and $10,000 for colleges.
Schools have welcomed the decision, which was narrowly passed by eight votes to six. Continuing the subsidy will mean an extra $2 a ratepayer.
