HAMILTON - High school student Nicole Tung will soon work alongside some of the brightest young scientific minds in Asia and the Pacific.
The Hamilton Girls High School seventh-former will join Aucklander Sandra Pope as New Zealand's representatives for a month of study at the Singapore Science Research School, starting on May 25.
Nicole Tung will don a lab coat and join biochemists to study cancer under the guidance of the university's scientists and engineers.
"I've had a couple of relatives who have had cancer and I'm interested to see what they've been through and what that involves, she said.
The 17-year-old studies chemistry and biology and is planning to do a science degree at Waikato University next year.
The scholarship is funded by the Singaporean Government and is administered here by the Royal Society of New Zealand.
Society spokeswoman Debbie Chan said New Zealand had been involved in the programme since 1990.
Two students each from about 10 countries would travel to Singapore.
"It's pretty hard work. They'll learn heaps," she said.
The 40 New Zealand applicants had to send their sixth-form grades, explain what aspects of science they were interested in and include a letter from their teacher.
