Stolen vehicles, meth and guns seized in Canterbury gang bust

Stolen vehicles, methamphetamine and guns have all been seized after police uncovered an alleged gang-linked “chop shop” operating in Canterbury.

Detective Senior Sergeant Damon Wells said over the past two weeks, police have executed search warrants at various properties associated with Mongrel Mob gang members in Christchurch and North Canterbury.

He said during the searches, police discovered the chop shop and successfully recovered several stolen vehicles, and also seized an array of other items.

“During these searches, police located and seized several thousand dollars in cash, methamphetamine, several firearms, and ammunition,” Wells said.

“Police also discovered a ‘chop shop’ and have been able to recover several stolen vehicles.”

A further five vehicles were seized by the courts due to unpaid fines.

“As a result, two men, who are both patched Mongrel Mob members, were arrested,” he said.

The pair have been remanded in custody, with a 34-year-old due to appear on March 25 and a 29-year-old due to appear on April 1.

Both are facing charges relating to driving matters, possession of methamphetamine for supply, possession of cannabis, and unlawful possession of ammunition.

Police have not ruled out further charges.

Wells said police were committed to disrupting and minimising the social harm caused by gangs in the community.
