Auckland's yachting prowess was of keen interest to a royal visitor today.
King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia of Spain spent much of the third day of their five-day visit to New Zealand examining yachting technology and exhibits about one of the country's favourite sailors, the late Sir Peter Blake.
Their first stop was the University of Auckland, where they viewed displays showcasing pioneering research in bioengineering, induction power and yacht design.
While at the university they were also introduced to Spanish language students and viewed a display of research and activities of the School of European Languages and Literatures.
Following a business lunch at Sky City, the King and Queen visited the Maritime Museum on Auckland's waterfront.
There they examined material about Sir Peter and unveiled a memorial plaque marking their visit to the museum.
The royal couple are due to officially open the Spanish Embassy in Wellington tomorrow.
