A 22-year-old soldier is dead after a crash overnight at the Waiouru military camp.
A vehicle being driven by the soldier had left a road in the camp, careered through a garden, and come to rest in a carpark behind the Army Museum, Constable Pete Sykes of Waiouru police said ina statement.
The up-turned vehicle had been noticed about 1.15am by a passing member of the public. The dead soldier -- the only occupant -- had been found inside.
Alcohol and speed appeared to be contributing factors, Mr Sykes said.
Heavy rain and hail showers had been falling at the time.
