KEY POINTS:
With improving weather and a promising swell forecast on the foreseeable horizon, soggy campers who have been forced to stay indoors over the past couple of days will finally be able to venture out of their tents and enjoy some sunshine!
And now on a sensible note...
Don't be deceived by overcast skies. Some of the worst sunburn I've dealt with has been dished out on cloudy days. You know the drill: slip, slop, slap and wrap.
Another sunsmart tip I've learnt from my time in surf life saving is to put sunscreen on the tops of your feet if you're wearing jandals. Seriously. Burnt feet are an absolute pain (literally). Remember to reapply sun block after swimming also.
And now on a more serious note...
In a matter of hours we will welcome 2009. Over the next few days, lifeguards will deal with the height of the 'silly season'. It doesn't take an expert to know that alcohol and surf are not a good mix - the results can in fact be disastrous. Please look out for your friends and family.
If you see any lifeguards on the beach, please wish them a happy New Year! We love it when the public comes up for a chat.
From all of the New Zealand's surf lifeguards, have a safe and happy New Year celebration!
