Skateboarder dies after Whangarei crash

A 19-year-old man has died after falling from his skateboard on the outskirts of Whangarei yesterday.

Acting Sergeant Stephanie Hudson said the teenager was skating down a steep hill in Maunu, 5km southwest of the city centre, when he lost control of his board and crashed.

Ms Hudson said the teenager was taken to Whangarei Hospital with serious head injuries and he died overnight.

A family member, believed to have been the boy's father, is thought to have seen the crash.
